Tech Neck

Man Looking at Phone

In today's screen-saturated world, it's hard to escape the pull of our devices. But that constant downward gaze is creating a very real problem that chiropractors see every day: tech neck (also called text neck or forward head posture).

Our head weighs roughly 10–12 pounds in its neutral position, balanced perfectly over our spine. For every inch our head shifts forward, the effective load on your neck muscles and cervical spine multiplies dramatically. At a typical 45–60° tilt, that "10-pound head" can feel more like 40–60 pounds.

What Tech Neck Feels Like The most common complaints include:

  • Chronic neck stiffness and soreness
  • Upper back and shoulder tension
  • Tension headaches that start at the base of the skull
  • Reduced range of motion when turning your head
  • Tingling or pain radiating into the arms (in more advanced cases)

Left unaddressed, forward head posture flattens the natural cervical curve, accelerates disc wear, sprains ligaments, and can contribute to long-term spinal degeneration. With the body constantly trying to compensate for the new head position, these issues become apparent day to day.

The Chiropractic Approach to Relief and Correction

Gentle cervical adjustments restore proper alignment to the vertebrae, reduce nerve irritation, and help re-establish the healthy forward curve in your neck. At Revelation Health, our patients are guided through their care beyond the adjustment.

  • Targeted soft-tissue work to release tight suboccipital and trapezius muscles
  • Corrective exercises that strengthen deep neck flexors and upper-back retractors
  • Postural retraining and ergonomic advice tailored to your daily routine (with possible homecare devices if needed)

Simple Steps You Can Start Today Prevention is far easier than correction. Try these habits:

  • Raise screens to eye level (use a stand or stack of books for laptops/phones)
  • Follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds
  • Perform chin tucks (gently slide your chin straight back like making a double chin) 10× several times a day
  • Set posture reminders on your phone or computer

Tech neck didn't develop overnight, and it won't disappear overnight either but consistent chiropractic care combined with mindful habits can reverse much of the damage and protect your spine for years to come.

If your neck feels like it's carrying the weight of the digital world, schedule an appointment. Your future self (and your cervical spine) will thank you.
